Let's take so called 'confidence baits' for example.

In my last letter, we talked about why most amateur bass
fishermen have the misconception that all lures are essentially
the same.

They might have two or maybe three baits in their tackle box
they use almost exclusively. These are among the first to be
cast, and the last to be reeled in; confidence baits.

These are their "magic" lures - the ones that always seem to
catch fish no matter what time of year or weather condition.

While they may try other baits, they always come back to one
of these confidence baits to put fish in the boat.

And guess what? You'll probably notice a pattern going on.

Every time you put your faith in just one or two lures,
you rely on luck and the pattern begins:

1. You know you need to be fishing a worm on a Carolina rig,
but you fish a topwater bait anyway because you feel more
comfortable with it...

2. A jig would be more effective around docks and downed trees,
but you feel better using a spinner bait...

3. You notice the baitfish is silver shad, but you fish a
chartreuse crankbait anyway because that seems to catch fish
most of the time...

(This is how most average amateur fishermen qualify their
choice of lures)

So, if you do this every time you go fishing, do you know what
you are actually thinking?

"Hey - MY WAY WORKS!"

...And the reliance on luck continues.

And this is why average amateur fishermen never catch bass on
a regular basis.

It's because they actually equate a successful choice of lure
with a skillful one and they only catch fish when they are lucky.

But luck is not the answer. You probably realize this by now.

Today, I'd like to teach you something about bass fishing.

Here it is:

Fish a jig around docks S L O W L Y.

Cast a jig to the back of the dock and let it sit there for a
couple of minutes. This gives the bass time to get over the splash
of the jig hitting the water. He'll fly away a few feet, but
once everything settles down, he'll get curious and come back
to see what's going on.

I've let a jig sit for five minutes or more before moving it
two-three inches at a time back toward the front of the dock
because I knew he was there, but depending on conditions, he
was finicky about striking.

Now, You can improve your skills with jigs and other plastic
baits within minutes.

Bass are lethargic and lazy as a rule in cold water. Their
metabolism slows down and they don't eat as much so you need
to put the lure practically in their face to get them to bite
